Tranexamic acid has recently become increasingly common in skincare products because of its effectiveness especially in treating melasma and skin hyperpigmentation induced by sun exposure. It’s benefit was first reported from an accidental observation after oral administration. In the particular case, the intensity of melasma was significantly reduced within a period of two to three weeks.
Research shows that it is also effective topically applied and works by inhibiting tyrosinase enzyme that is responsible for producing the pigment melanin. Tranexamic acid reduces the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight and helps to fade discoloration, brighten and improve tone. It also helps to calm skin, reduce inflammation and restore barrier function.
